Winterizing Your Custom Home

Home / Blog / Winterizing Your Custom Home

winterize-custom-new-homeCold weather is fast approaching which means that homeowners have a few chores to tend to in order for their homes to be ready for winter. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure that your house in good shape for this winter season.

After months and months of running the cool air, be sure to have your heating system inspected as well as cleaned. In addition to this, furnace filters need to be cleaned or replaced.

Before you begin roasting marshmallows and cozying up to a crackling fire, be sure that your chimney is cleaned and inspected.

Everyone LOVES cleaning gutters! (enter sarcasm) Make sure to remove all debris and leaves before the weather gets too cold and all motivation is lost.

In order to avoid freezing pipes, be sure to cover your outdoor faucets. Remember that if you build with Cannon Custom Homes, your outdoor faucets will be built with a shut-off valve that will allow you to shut off the water supply to your outdoor faucets that you can drain. This feature saves you from the risk of a broken pipes and hundreds of dollars in repair costs. Lastly, don’t forget to drain your hoses and store them inside the garage.

Double check the caulking around doors and windows as well as cracks or pitting in the concrete. Make sure that they are filled and sealed. Be sure to turn off and winterize your lawn irrigation system.

Treat your plants with love by mulching your perennials and covering or storing potted plants inside. Also replace dead trees or shrubs; do not put this off until the spring.

Completing this short “to do” list every fall will prevent problems that could arise if left unattended. It will also help keep your house and yard looking and performing like new. Happy winterizing!
